Protein Meal Replacement Powders

Meal replacement powders (MRPs), are typically protein-based drink mixes that are intended as a quick and nutritious alternative when you can't get a "real" meal. Such protein shakes have been a long time favorite source of extra calories and protein for strength training athletes and bodybuilders, but advances in taste and texture (and marketing) have brought MRPs to "the masses."

In most cases, the "typical" American diet provides plenty of protein to prevent muscle loss (or "catabolism" as many of the products promise to protect you from). However, the typical American diet also provides more than enough fat for us to cover those muscles with a thick blanket of cushiony fat, making MRPs an attractive choice for people trying to watch what they eat. Almost all MRPs provide a high-quality source of protein as the base, which delivers a complete amino acid profile containing the essential amino acids (phenyalanine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, isoleucine, methionine, histidine, arginine, lysine, leucine). As such, MRPs can be an excellent way to fortify your protein intake.
